This week is Aromatherapy Awareness week which got me thinking about my Aromatherapy journey and how I started using essential oils on myself and all of you – which I thought I would share with you.
Many many years ago I had an idea that I wanted to work on cruise liners to travel the world, how could I do this? A conversation with a work college sparked an interest in body massage and I researched and found a college. This was one of the best steps forward I have taken in my life. I qualified in Swedish Massage and Anatomy and Physiology. This was enough to get me travelling however, I had met a wonderful tutor at my college called Zakia Collins. She was enthusiastic about aromatherapy and the use of essential oils, and she passed this enthusiasm onto me. I studied with her the ITEC Diploma in Aromatherapy in 1994.
In 1995 I went to sea for a number of years as a Spa Therapist. We used Elemis products in all our treatments, beautiful facial and body products containing essential oils, I was trained in all of their body treatments, facials, wraps, indulgent treatments and all with these wonderfully smelling and therapeutic products. I held workshops on board ships to passengers, teaching them how to massage and how to use essential oils at home, these were always extremely popular and I thoroughly enjoyed passing on my knowledge, even though in the beginning it was extremely daunting!
I have since used essential oils in my life everyday, I make my own facial products, massage oils, bath oils, soaps etc, all containing essential oils, I can do this for you too. They not only smell divine but they have some fantastic therapeutic benefits to the mind body and soul.
So what is Aromatherapy? Aromatherapy, also referred to as Essential Oil therapy, can be defined as the art and science of utilising naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonise and promote the health of body, mind and spirit. It seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.
Each essential oil has an effect on your mind body and spirit and being able to develop a blend that not only smells delicious but will help your well being is a true skill. I have a huge love and passion for oils, when you come to me for a treatment and we are having your consult, I am listening to your words, watching your movements , feeling your energy to decide which oils I am going to use on your that day to bring out the best in what you need.
Rather than turning to traditional medicine I will always try to find an oil or 2 to help me first, at home. I have a diffuser that is nearly always on in my house with different oils in every day dependant on my mood, what clients I have in and what the children are up to, and the time of day. I also use oils in the bath, I use them in the house to clean, I use nasal inhalers, car diffusers, drops of oils all over my house! There are so many wonderful ways of using oils, and I am always happy to advise you on the best oils for you to use on yourself too. Every Tuesday I share an aromatherapy tip on my facebook page, you can like my page and read my tip weekly.
Why not start using oils yourself at home, start experimenting with a couple to see how they make you feel, some will resonate with you but others may not – let them go.
Maybe you feel a bit out of balance, like you need a little uplift, perhaps Geranium is the oil for you …………..
